Overview
A pair of Midland X-Talker FRS handheld radios bundled with everything to run them out of the box: rechargeable packs, a drop-in charger, USB and 12V charging, two hands-free boom headsets, and a carry case. FRS means no license — useful comms for convoy, camp, and recovery.
Key features
- 36 channels (22 FRS + 14 hard-coded), 121 privacy codes
- Up to 38-mile range in open, line-of-sight conditions
- NOAA weather scan locks the strongest local weather channel + alerts
- 1000mAh rechargeable pack per radio, or 3 AA alkalines as backup
- eVOX hands-free voice activation plus Hi/Lo power settings
- Two boom-mic headsets with push-to-talk for hands-free operation
Use cases
Built for keeping a trail group talking when phones drop out — rig to rig in a convoy, base to spotter on a recovery, or camp to camp at a group site. The headsets make it work while your hands are busy, and the weather scan turns each radio into a quick storm check.

Do I need a license to use these?
No. FRS radios need no FCC license. Power them on and talk — they are legal for anyone to use right out of the box.
Is the 38-mile range realistic?
That number is the best case over open water or from a ridgeline with nothing in the way. Trees, hills, and buildings cut range hard. On a wooded trail, plan on roughly 1 to 2 miles between rigs; across open desert or from a high point you will get much more.
Can I use regular AA batteries?
Yes. Each radio takes the 1000mAh rechargeable pack or 3 AA alkalines. Pack spare AAs for long trips so a drained pack does not sideline a radio.
How long does a charge last?
About 5 hours on high power at a 90/5/5 duty cycle (mostly standby with short bursts of talk and listen). Light convoy chatter lasts longer, and switching to Lo power stretches it further.
Will these talk to other FRS radios?
Yes. FRS is a shared standard, so any FRS radio on the same channel and privacy code can join the conversation, regardless of brand.
How long do the rechargeable packs last?
Midland suggests replacing the rechargeable packs roughly every 9 to 12 months with regular use. When run time drops off, swap the pack or run AA alkalines.
