Overview
The MAXTRAX Rope Dampener is a winch line safety blanket. You drape it over a loaded recovery line and fill its two sleeves with weight so that if the line fails, it falls instead of whipping back.
Key features
- 420 Denier Oxford nylon shell with polypropylene webbing
- Two open sleeves you fill with sand or water bottles for mass
- 53 cm by 39 cm (about 21" by 15") empty; 320g before filling
- Attaches to a rope loop with a MAXTRAX Fuse Shackle
- Works with synthetic rope and steel winch cable
- 1-year warranty
Use cases
Use it any time you put real load on a recovery line, whether you're winching a stuck rig out or running a kinetic snatch strap. Two dampeners, one each side of the rigging, is a common setup for long high-load pulls.

What does a rope dampener actually do?
It adds weight and drag to a recovery line. If a winch line or strap fails under load, the dampener pulls the line down toward the ground instead of letting it whip back at head height.
How much weight do I put in it?
Fill the two sleeves with sand or water bottles. About 5 lb is a common starting point for most rigs; more mass means the line drops harder if it fails.
Where on the line does it go?
Drape it over the line before you put it under tension, positioned near the middle of the rope and close to the Fuse Shackle.
Does it work with synthetic rope and steel cable?
Yes. A draped dampener saps energy from synthetic rope or steel winch cable the same way.
How do I clean and store it?
Rinse it with fresh water, air dry it, and store it dry. Don't use it if it's frayed or burned; replace damaged recovery gear.
Do I need two of them?
One covers most self-recoveries. For long, high-load pulls many people run two, one on each side of the rigging.
