HFM Farm Cowboy Cookout Rub
HFM Farm Cowboy Cookout Rub
Cowboy Cookout Rub is HFM Farm's smoky barbecue blend — chipotle chili powder, brown sugar, black pepper, paprika, ground mustard, sage, coffee, and sea salt in a 3.8 oz shaker. Eight ingredients, no MSG.
Coffee and chipotle are what make it. Ground coffee in a rub adds bitterness and depth that reads as char, and chipotle brings smoke rather than raw heat, so you get a barbecue flavor without needing a smoker. The brown sugar matters for how you cook it: sugar caramelizes and then burns, so this belongs on indirect heat or a grate a reasonable distance off the coals, not straight onto flame.

Use cases
Beef first — chuck roast, brisket, steaks, burgers — where the coffee and chipotle have something to work against. It also holds up on pork, chicken thighs, and cast-iron potatoes. Use it on a grate over coals or indirect heat rather than straight into flame.

Does the coffee make it taste like coffee?
Not really. Ground coffee in a rub reads as bitterness and depth rather than as a coffee flavor — it's what makes the meat taste like it spent longer over smoke than it did.
How hot is it?
Mild to medium. Chipotle is a smoked jalapeño, so it brings smoke more than sharp heat. Nobody's going to be reaching for water.
Can I use it over an open fire?
Use indirect heat or keep the grate well off the coals. The brown sugar caramelizes and then burns, which turns bitter. If you're cooking directly over flame, the Monty's Original rub has no sugar in it and is the better pick.
Does it contain MSG?
No. Cowboy Cookout and Tuscan Garden Mix are the two seasonings here without MSG.
How is this different from Nacho Regular Seasoning?
They overlap a lot — both use chipotle, brown sugar, paprika, ground mustard, sage, and coffee. Nacho Regular adds cumin, onion, garlic, and chili powder on top, which pushes it toward taco and chili territory. Cowboy Cookout is the simpler, more barbecue-focused of the two.
What size is the shaker?
3.8 oz.
