Southern Sweet is the dessert end of HFM Farm's shelf — 100% beef in a sweet BBQ sauce with maple syrup and brown sugar. An ounce carries 16 g of protein at 110 calories, so a 2 oz bag runs 32 g of protein for 220 calories.

The numbers tell you what it is: 7 g of sugar per ounce, against 1 g in Monty's Original and 3 g in the A1 flavors. That's the whole point. Maple and brown sugar sit on top of a BBQ base, and the finish is closer to a glazed rib than to a savory jerky. It's also one of the lower-sodium flavors at 270 mg per ounce, so the sweetness isn't fighting salt.

The ingredient list is short — six items — and MSG is one of them. Sealed, it's shelf-stable; refrigerate once opened and finish within 7 days. Single 2 oz bag or a 3-pack at 6 oz total, $3.98 under three singles. Made in small batches by Joey and Brandi Federico in Jacksonville, Florida.

Use cases

This is the crowd-pleaser and the kid-friendly pick — camp, game day, lunch boxes, and the flavor to hand somebody who says they don't like jerky. It also works as a deliberate sugar-plus-protein stop on a long cold drive, where a plain savory jerky doesn't scratch the same itch.
