Overview

The MXAT04 is Midland's 6.6 dB heavy-duty fiberglass bullbar antenna for GMRS, standing 47.5 inches tall and tuned for the 462-468 MHz band. Antenna only — no spring base or coax included.

Does this come with the spring base and coax cable?

No. This is the antenna only. The heavy-duty spring base and the 19.5-foot coax come in the separate value-pack SKU. The antenna is interchangeable with that base if you add it later.

Do I need a license to use it?

The antenna itself needs no license. The GMRS radio you connect it to does require an FCC GMRS license. There is no test, and one license covers your household.

Does it need a ground plane?

Yes. Like all mobile GMRS antennas, it needs a ground plane to perform as designed: roughly 12 inches of steel or aluminum across for GMRS frequencies. The surface does not have to be continuous, so a hood, fender, or bullbar tab can work.

How much more range than a 3 dB antenna?

The 6.6 dB gain concentrates more of the signal toward the horizon than a 3 dB stubby, so you reach farther over open ground. It does this without the full height of a long-range whip.

What frequencies does it cover?

It is tuned for the GMRS band, 462-468 MHz.

Will it hold up on the trail?

It is a heavy-duty fiberglass whip and is water resistant for full-time outdoor mounting, backed by a 1-year warranty. Pair it with the spring base if you run tight, brushy trails where the whip takes regular hits.
