DMOS Compact Delta Shovel

The Compact Delta is the next-generation E-tool: same small package, significantly stronger construction. The triangular (delta) blade geometry concentrates force at the leading edge, cutting through compacted dirt, frozen ground, and dense sand more efficiently than a flat rectangular blade. At 20 inches collapsed and 3.2 lbs, it fits in gear compartments where full-size recovery shovels don't — without sacrificing the blade quality and handle strength that determine whether a shovel actually works when you're buried off-trail.

Blade and connector: 16-gauge cold-rolled carbon steel blade, powder-coated for corrosion resistance. The blade locks into three positions using a solid milled 6061 aluminum connector — no flex at the joint when you're driving through hard pack. Six oversized aluminum rivets reinforce the bracket.

Handle: 6063 anodized aluminum telescoping shaft. Locks at 24.5 inches (compact mode) or 34 inches (full extension). Nylon Zytel T-grip at the top provides a second grip point for leverage. Extension takes seconds without tools.

Three blade positions: Shovel mode (perpendicular to handle for digging), hoe mode (angled for pulling and clearing), stow mode (blade flat along handle for transport). One tool covers the main campsite and recovery tasks that otherwise require multiple implements.

Mount compatibility: Fits DMOS Universal Mount and dedicated Compact Delta mount for exterior rack, bed rail, or roof rack attachment. Keeps the shovel accessible from outside the rig when you need it immediately.

What's the difference between the Compact Delta and the standard Delta Shovel?

Compact Delta: 20" collapsed, 34" extended, 3.2 lbs, 16-gauge carbon steel blade (10" × 7.5"). Standard Delta: 24" collapsed, 51" extended, 5.7 lbs, 14-gauge carbon steel blade (12.25" × 10.5"). The Compact is optimized for tighter storage and lighter rigs — a better fit for day packs, smaller gear bays, and rigs where weight and space are at a premium. The standard Delta has more reach and more blade surface for high-volume digging and camp work.

How does the delta (triangular) blade actually help?

A triangular blade concentrates digging force at a single leading point rather than distributing it across a wide flat face. This lets you start a cut in hard or compacted material — packed sand, dry clay, frozen topsoil — without needing as much downward force to break the surface. Once the point starts the cut, the widening blade shape clears the hole efficiently. Flat blades hit the whole surface at once and require more initial force to penetrate.

Can I use the hoe position for vehicle recovery?

Yes. In hoe position the blade is angled for a scraping/pulling stroke rather than a push-down digging stroke. This is useful for pulling material out from under a vehicle, clearing packed sand or gravel away from a stuck tire, or working in tight spaces where a vertical digging stroke isn't possible. It's also effective for campsite prep — clearing pine needles, loose soil, or rocks from a tent area.

Does the blade connector stay tight under hard use?

The solid milled aluminum connector is one of the more important details on this shovel. Cheap folding shovels use cast or stamped connectors that flex under load — this is what causes the head to wobble after a few hard strikes. The Compact Delta connector is machined from solid 6061 aluminum block and reinforced with six oversized rivets. It's substantially more rigid than standard E-tool connectors and handles repeated hard-ground impacts without play.

Does it fit the DMOS shovel bags?

Yes — the Compact Delta fits the DMOS Compact Delta Shovel Bag (sold separately). It will not fit the standard Delta Shovel Bag, which is sized for the longer Delta. If you're building a mount system, the Compact Delta works with DMOS universal and dedicated vehicle mounts.

Is it worth the price vs a military surplus E-tool?

The standard military E-tool (M1910 pattern) runs 22-24 inches extended and weighs 2.5-3 lbs — comparable stats. But the E-tool uses a cast connector that develops wobble over time, a narrower blade with less cutting efficiency, and doesn't telescope (fixed two-length hinge only). The Compact Delta's solid aluminum connector, telescoping handle, and delta blade geometry justify the price difference for people who rely on a shovel in demanding recovery situations.
